Remco Evenepoel sealed his first exploit at the Giro d’Italia by winning the opening stage with the jersey of Belgian champion for time trialling. He rode at the impressive pace of 55.2km/h and bettered the other specialists including Italian champion Filippo Ganna on all terrains, on the flat section of the bike path and the uphill stretch to Ortona. His main rival for the overall classification Primoz Roglic lost 43 seconds on the 19.6km course. The young Belgian is in the Maglia Rosa for the first time in his career.
